Intriguing unoaked defined Merlot Cabernet blend from Lalande de Pomerol, for an accessible, any day Bordeaux
An unoaked cuvee, well-defined, taut and linear bouquet, a light marine influence coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, good texture, good grip, and black pepper and graphite notes toward the finish for everyday drinking.
Château Canon Chaigneau is located on the eastern side of the Lalande de Pomerol appellation on the Néac plateau, and just to the north of the Pomerol plateau, where the likes of Petrus, Lafleur, la Conseillante and Clinet can be found.
At Canon Chaigneau, they are lucky enough to have a terroir of clay, limestone & iron deposits; very similar to those great names just to the south, a terroir adding genuine complexity and making for excellent, refined & age worthy wines.
Indeed, the Romans recognised the greatness of their terroir, and winemaking began here almost 2000 years ago.
Thierry Garnaud, winemaker at Cheval Blanc for 38 vintages and with Chateau Canon Chaigneau since 1995, wanted to try his hand at something different. A pure expression of a unique terroir, but more modern, without oak, and available as an everyday drinker, without breaking the bank.
Made from specific parcels of slightly younger vines, it's vinified & matured solely in concrete, and can be enjoyed sooner than it's ‘grand vin' sibling. Not a second wine, but very much a different cuvée.
Mushroom dishes, grilled beef, roast lamb, guinea fowl in all its guises, and anything with girolles
