From some of the oldest living Riesling blocks in New Zealand, this is a zesty wonderland of lime and joy.
A nose of fresh ginger, cardamom and jasmine over a rich palate of juicy lime, red apple and stone fruit, with generous mouthfeel and texture in the finish. Feels like lounging in the sun.
Hermann Seifried planted on Moutere's rich, clay soils what were to become Heaphy's blocks in the early 1970s, indeed their Moutere Old Vine Riesling 2023 celebrates its 50th harvest, amongst the oldest working vines in New Zealand. The vineyard itself is dry grown, allowing for the roots to fully delve into this ward's unique Moutere Clays and Mapua Sandy Loams that shape the resulting body and texture, whilst their proximity to the vast Tasman Bay brings salinity to all the wines. Today the farm's 9.8ha focuses on its long-established blocks of Mendoza-clone Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. They continue the existing grower relationships built over years with neighbouring farms to augment Heaphy's own vineyard.
Heaphy Riesling comes from 30 & 50 year old unirrigated vines grown on Moutere clay soils, the wine is a delightful red apple and lime combo whose generous body and lifted aromatics.
Harvested in late February then crushed to tank, settled and racked, then allowed to settle on fine lees for 8 months prior to bottling.
